Damage to the spinal cord, which transmits impulses to and from the brain, is referred to as a spinal cord injury. Depending on the extent of the injury, a person with spinal cord damage may have a loss of sensation and motor function. The majority of spinal cord injuries are partial, meaning the chord is not severed. Certain injuries allow for a nearly full recovery. Others will cause total immobility. Diseases, compressions, and fractures can all harm the spinal cord: A spinal cord injury can result from a fracture of the spine that pushes disc material, breaks into the spinal cord, or displaces bone fragments. Nerve cells that transmit messages to and from the brain can be harmed by compression of the spinal cord. Spinal cord injuries can result from uncommon spinal cord diseases.
